Jeremy's Story Excerpt 3
The older man with the strangely macho-husky voice gestured for Jeremy to follow him. He didn’t seem very happy to see Jeremy. A sharp contrast to the welcome Jeremy had received from Principal Henderson. Jeremy followed, but not before he acknowledged Jeffrey with a shy smile and a nod. Jeremy heard the whisper as he took his first steps towards the offices. “Don’t let him push you around.” With that message ringing in his ears, Jeremy entered Vice-Principal Harold Karson’s office. It was spotless. There were files all over the room, but they were stacked in neat piles, in stackable boxes that were all labeled.
OCD much? Mr. Karson grunted for Jeremy to sit down. A grunt? Really? “Excuse the mess. It’s a busy time right now.” Jeremy smiled politely and started to sit. Before he could, the vice-principal stopped him with another grunt and gestured with his free hand as he stooped down, retrieved a disposable toilet seat cover, and handed it to Jeremy. “Would you mind sitting on that? Thank you.” Jeremy frowned. He recognized that tone of voice. He’d heard plenty of that sort of talk when he’d been living on the streets right after his mother had died—that dismissive “you’re no good” tone. Never felt so worthless in my life.
His dad and stepmom had warned him that people might be uncomfortable with his HIV status. He hadn’t experienced any of that so far; he hadn’t really. His dad had actually taken a few months to shop around for schools that would understand Jeremy’s situation.
The principal of Desmond Tutu High School had been extremely welcoming—it seemed fitting considering the name of the institution—and as an added bonus, the school was close to home. Jeremy hadn’t thought any of the staff had a problem with him.
Guess I was wrong.

My Review

This is a good read. Its all about a 15 year old with HIV.

Jeremy has had a tough time, abused as a kid, survived on streets and now has HIV - all under control though thanks to the fact he found his dad and he took him in - what a lovely family he has, so supportive and caring.

Jeremy has been persuaded to go back to school, so its his first day at high school and so much happens, a boy know as Jeffrey latches onto him - and they become an item just like that, that same evening he comes out to his dad, no problem.

I don't want to go into everything that happens but let me tell you in the space of 3 days the boys are in a relationship (non-sexual of course) and the other boys dad kicks off. It all just snowballs. Among all the hassles Jeremy is well supported by his family and his new friends Jeffrey and Arnold - they are really nice trio.

Now I could see all these things happening quite easily in real life, its the time line that I found unrealistic if it was spread over 2-3 weeks it would have been more acceptable. Also Jeffrey was willing to give his family up for a boy his known 2 days....... don't get me wrong his dad was scum and very homophobic, but they had only just met!

Now all my criticism sounds like I didn't enjoy reading this book, I did would just have preferred timeline extended.

3.5 stars
